Itinerary of: 16 Days Tour From Casablanca

Day 1: Casablanca > Chefchaouen (206 miles / 332 km)

Your driver will pick you up from the hotel at or airport You’ll have the opportunity to see the Hassan Mosque if you like. (If you haven’t seen it on your own.) The architecture itself is quite impressive.  Once en route to Chefchaouen, you will take the ocean road toward Rabat, Morocco’s capital city. Along the way, you will pass through small towns nestled in a fertile agricultural region. From Rabat, it will take about 3.5 – 4 hours to get to Chefchaouen. As you enter the Rif Mountains region you’ll notice a distinct change in the landscape. The mountains are quite distinct. You may notice that the towns have an Andalusian flair to the architecture resulting from the Spanish influence. You’ll find Chefchaouen tucked into the Rif Mountains. You’ll stay in a beautiful riad for the night.

Day 2: Explore Chefchaouen

You’ll have today to relax and take in the sights of Chefchaouen. The medina of Chefchaouen is filled with handicrafts and is simple to navigate on foot. You’ll also notice that the traditional clothing worn by the Berber women in Chefchaouen is unique to the entire country.  In Chefchaouen there are two weekly market days (Mondays and Thursdays). This is when people from the surrounding mountain villages come to sell their produce, as well as other items. You’ll find crates of produce everywhere along with the balancing scales of old. There are also various spas your driver can recommend.  Toward evening, you may be interested in walking up the hillside to view the city as the sun goes down. If you do choose to walk up the hillside, get your cameras ready. You can get some really good shots as the city slowly lights up.

Day 3: Chefchaouen > Fes (via Moulay Idris)(201 km / 125 miles)

After breakfast, you’ll head toward the medieval city of Fes. On the way you’ll stop in Moulay Idris for some tea or lunch if the timing is right.   After Moulay Idris, you’ll head  to the imperial city of Meknes. You’ll see the medina and some of the other sights such as the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. After leaving Meknes, it’s on to the amazing medieval city of Fes. You’ll spend the night in a beautiful riad in the medina.

Day 4: Explore Fes

You will have a full day to explore Fes. This includes a private guide through the medina. Only specially certified city guides are allowed to accompany tourists in Fes, this is why your driver won’t guide you through the city. Even Moroccans who didn’t grow up in Fes can easily get lost through the maze of winding streets and alleyways.  If you are interested in pottery, there is a pottery shop outside the oldest part of the city that has the famous Fesi pottery. You’ll be able to see how the pottery and the mosaics are created and painted.  Your night will be spent in the same riad as the night before.

Day 5: Fes – Erfoud

After breakfast, you will head out of Fes. Today’s drive will be a bit long. Not too far out of Fes you’ll gradually climb into Morocco’s Middle Atlas Mountains. Here you may catch a glimpse of the Barbary Macaques, or monkeys. You will travel through Midelt, an area well known for apples. About 70 kilometers from Errachidia, you’ll pass through the beautiful Ziz Valley.  Later in the day, you’ll reach erfoud  where you’ll stay in a guesthouse

Day 6: Erfoud to Tamnougalt

After breakfast, you’ll find yourselves back in the car. You will continue to head south where you’ll enter an area or Morocco well known for trilobites. If that’s of interest there is a guy in the village of Alnif who has a lot of knowledge (as well as a large collection) of these interesting (but strange) creatures.  You’ll also be traveling through the heart of the henna growing area in Morocco.  You’ll continue to drive southwest and come upon a small town N’kob. There’s a beautiful panoramic here where you can see palm groves growing along a river.  Eventually you will enter Tamnougalt. Tamnougalt was the government seat in the 1500s during the caravans. If interested you can stay in the Tamnougalt Kasbah

Day 7: Tamnougalt > Erg Chegaga

You’ll have breakfast and then head on out in the direction of the Sahara Desert. You’ll pass through the town of Zagora where you’ll see the famous sign: 52 Days to Tombouctou. After Zagora you’ll continue south until you come to M’Hamid and the end of the road. You’ll find Erg Chegaga 60 kilometers after the road ends.

Day 8: Enjoy Erg Chigaga

Today you’ll have the day to enjoy the area. You may want to visit a nearby nomad family or take a walk through the dunes and take amazing photos.

Day 9: Erg Chigaga > Ouarzazate

After breakfast you’ll head out in the opposite direction from which you came. This time you’ll pass through 90 kilometers off road.  You’ll pass through Lake Iriki which has been dry for many years. Your host will show you right where it is and you’ll be amazed because it won’t look that different from the other sites you see. Upon reaching the road you’ll pass through Foum Zgid.  Shortly after you’ll enter the village of Tazehakht, famous for its green pottery. You may wish to stretch your legs and see how the pottery is made. Afterwards you’ll continue the journey until you reach the famous Ait Ben Haddou. Depending on timing, you may wish to walk through the ksar (ksar is the plural of kasbah) and consider how you’ll compose your photos in the morning.

Day 10: Ouarzazate > Ait Bougomez Valley (via Telouet)

You’ll be able to get all the shots you want of Ait Ben Haddou early in the morning before most people arrive. After breakfast, you’ll head out toward the Ounila Valley and Kasbah Telouet.  Upon reaching Telouet, you’ll have a tour From Telouet, you will slowly make your way to Ait Bougomez Valley. This could take between 5-7 hours depending on the road.

Day 11: Explore Ait Bougomez Valley

You’ll have the day to explore the area with a trekking guide. You’ll walk between villages and enjoy all the sites. Lunch will be at the home of a local Berber family.

Day 12 Ait Bougomez Valley to Marrakech

You will leave ait Bougomez leave and head toward Marrakech.  You’ll pass through the High Atlas Mountains where you’ll want to stop for photos as it’s very beautiful country.  Later in the day, you’ll descend into Morocco’s Red City.

Day 13: Explore Marrakech

Your local guide will be on hand to facilitate your exploration of Marrakech. the medina during the day, he will make a tour   in the medina. The other locations that can be reached by car such as Majorelle Gardens,   and of course . We can also make suggestions for lunch. Whatever you decide to do on this day, you’ll have the driver and car available. There’s no need to plan too far ahead, we are quite flexible and your driver will give suggestions when he knows what your interests are.

Day 14: Marrakech > Essaouira (196 km, 119 miles)

Although it’s just 2.5 hours to Essaouira and the Atlantic coast, you’ll usually experience a considerable change in weather. If it’s hot in Marrakech, Essaouira will be a relief from the heat. The weather in Essaouira is rather moderate no matter what time of year you visit. You’ll enjoy strolling on the beach and visiting the famous ramparts built by the Portuguese. If you like fish, you will find you’ve come to the right place. If not, there are plenty of other foods to satisfy.

Day 15: Explore Essaouira

You’ll have all day to explore Essaouira and all it has to offer. If you enjoy photography, you’ll want to walk along the ramparts as there are great shots from there (seen below). If you enjoy markets, much can be found in the medina. We can recommend an excellent spa if interested in total relaxation. If you are interested in authentic argan oil, the driver can take you to a town not too far away and you can tour the facility and see how it’s made. Note: We are very careful about where we take you for argan. Unfortunately, there are more illegitimate women’s cooperatives than legitimate ones.

Day 16: Essaouira > Casablanca

You’ll take the coastal road to Casablanca. Along the road you’ll pass through the cities of Safi and El Jedida. The end of service
